According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “an estimated 42.1 million people, or 18.1% of all adults (aged 18 or older), in the United States smoke cigarettes”. It’s an astonishing number considering the government’s efforts to raise prices of cigarettes and ban their use in most bars, restaurants, and other business establishments. The unfortunate outcome of this war on tobacco is the people that are already smoking over ten cigarettes every day and can’t afford to continue, but can’t handle the withdraw symptoms of quitting. These people weren’t left with many options until now – the age of the ecig.

If you’ve heard the word “ecig” then you’ve probably heard the word “vaping”. As explained by Grimm Green on his blog, “vaping utilizes a Propylene Glycol, or Vegetable Glycerin based liquid, mixed with small amounts of nicotine and food grade flavoring that then get vaporized in a small battery powered atomizer, simulating the experience of smoking”. Vaping has taken the nation by storm, allowing smokers a safer alternative and the ability to free themselves from the constraints of cigarettes such as the scent and limited designated areas to smoke. This week I talked to a former smoker turned ecig aficionado in an effort to learn more about the lure of ecigs.

CC: When did you first hear about vaping?

Mike: I saw a kiosk selling ecigs in the mall. They asked me if I smoked and when I said yes, they let me try one.

CC: Were you a heavy smoker?

Mike: Yes. I smoked about a pack a day of Camel Turkish Royals.

CC: What finally made you want to start vaping?

Mike: Lots of reasons, mostly my wife. She hated the way it made me smell, and she always worried about the health risks. I had to go outside in the freezing cold because I couldn’t smoke in my apartment or anywhere. When I did smoke in my car, it got ash on everything so I always had to clean it out which was a huge pain in the ass.

CC: Was it hard to give up smoking cigarettes?

Mike: Not really. Ecigs helped with the oral fixation from smoking and also still gave me the nicotine without any other chemicals or bi-products. I haven’t had a cigarette for over a year.

CC: What’s the best part about vaping verses smoking?

Mike: It’s a lot healthier than smoking and I can use my ecig anywhere.

CC: Do you have a hard time vaping in various business establishments?

Mike: No, not at all. It’s become a social norm and especially in the state of Wisconsin, the government is all for it.

CC: What advice would you give someone that wants to quit smoking and start vaping?

Mike: I would say visit a place that specializes in vaping so not only will you be able to try it before you buy it, but they’ll also give you any and all information about what’s in it and what’s going into your body. They can also help you find a device that specifically suits your smoking habits.

If you’re ready to start your journey away from cigarettes and onto ecigs, get online or ask around to find your local ecig shop. They’re popping up as fast as medical marijuana dispensaries and are fairly easy to find in your city, or at the very least, online. They’re also making the news as this new age of vaping dawns. Featured in the below video is Ecig 53, an ecig shop with two locations in Wisconsin on WQOW news.

Whether you’re a heavy smoker, or just like to have a cigarette or two with your drink of choice, it’s important to focus on the numerous benefits of making the change to ecigs. Finding the right ecig, flavor, and nicotine level suited for you is a task that any ecig shop owner will be knowledgeable about. It’s important that you seek their advice, but also to do your own research to get an idea of what you want. It’s time to quit smoking. This is your life, so take charge and upgrade the quality by vaping.

**UPDATE** As local government laws continue to restrict the usage of e-cigarettes in businesses and restaurants in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the owners of ECIG53 speak out. (And yes, that is me in the interview because I happened to be in the store at the time.) If you’re interested in their flavors, stop by their website at and have a look!
